STABILYS® A, a range of coating starches to reduce costs while preserving the environment.
Papermaking, especially in Europe, is facing a down turn due to the economic crisis. Because of this, cost savings have become the main driver for development.
Serving the paper industry for more than 40 years, Roquette has developed STABILYS® A, a range of coating starches, to replace part of the latex in coating colours. This range is made from renewable resources and the production process generates minimal pollution. It provides not only cost savings to the coated paper manufacturer by replacing latex but also will help in stabilising coating costs.
Latex replacement can be up half or more in the pre-coat recipe and up to 20 % in the top-coat without impairing the paper quality in terms of strength, optical properties and printability. Compared to 100% latex formulations, pre-coat binder costs can be reduced by 25% and top-coat by 10%.
The coating colour runnability is at least as good as a 100% latex coating mix and the final paper optical properties, mechanical characteristics and printability are maintained or improved, as illustrated below:
