Regulations concerning papers and cardboard destined for contact with food, although based on the same general demands (the principle of inertia and non-toxicity) is quite dissimilar from one country to another. It requires a good knowledge of the texts as well as a constant follow-up of the modifications that take place. Within the E.U., regulations are essentially national while waiting for total community harmonisation (the reference in our field of activities is the n° 36 recommendation of the BFR). In the USA, one has to refer to 21 CFR and Food Contact notifications. Yet in other countries (such as Asia), regulations are only starting to be implemented.
